AMENITIES

What kind of rooms? (L&D, LDRP..)8 LDR's: 5 regular and 3 birthing rooms (only difference is that birthing rooms are larger rooms than regular rooms..but all are LDR's) - cots are available for dads who are sleeping overnight to help tend to mom and baby.
Cafeteria hours/what is their food like: Open 7am-7pm
Refreshments available at L&D: (juice? coffee? snacks?) juice, jello, crackers..
Microwave available? yes
TV/VCR/CD available? TVs in every room. 1 CD player - first come first serve
Showers/Tubs/Jacuzzis in rooms? On floor? waterbirth available? Showers and tubs in each room - no jetted tubs...hand held showerheads.

Two nurses told me that there was recently a patient there who almost did a waterbirth, she had brought in her own birthing pool...but she chose not to do an actual waterbirth and she got out for delivery. I was told that waterbirth IS an option there...if mom brings her own birthing pool and makes all arrangements with her care provider and the hospital ahead of time.

Telemetry units available? waterproof telemetry? No
Birth Balls provided? Yes - 1 ball
Birthing stools available? No
Does this hospital have a doula program? No
What level of nursery does it have? Level 2
Can newborn assessments be done bedside? Yes- except first bath.
Is baby taken to nursery? if so, how soon and for how long? Yes, for first bath...4-6 hours after delivery.
Can both partner and doula attend cesareans? No..only one support person allowed. (although I was also told that they aren't sure if anyone has ASKED to have more than one, so the possibility is still there, but it's certainly not routine)
Doula is allowed to stay in for epidural administration, though.

POLICIES

Eating/drinking in labor? Fine, depending on physician.
Fetal monitoring? 20 minute initial strip, then use doppler unless a problem arises.
IV/heplock: Not routinely - per physicians orders.
Walking after rupture of membranes? As long as there is no problem with the baby, fine.
Pushing positions: Fine, depending upon physician.

Cesarean rate - 2004: 22%
Of those that had cesareans, 50% were "repeat cesareans".
How many births a month/year are done here? 618 births in 2004

COMMENTS FROM DOULAS WHO HAVE ATTENDED THERE- "The nurses seemed VERY nice and accomodating! The rooms are not as new as a lot of other hospitals...but they are much bigger than a lot of hospitals. This hospital is "for sale", so things might change if it's bought...but for now, it is a very nice although small place to have your baby. A lot of people are scared away from it because it's in an icky part of town....but I really liked this hospital and the staff!"
